  • Answer:

I would add that he was madly in love with Anne Boleyn and she, being canny, refused to sleep with him unless he married her.The efforts by Cardinal Wolsey and others to obtain a divorce from the Pope became known as The King's Great Matter. In the end, the only way that Henry could be free to marry was by declaring himself Head of the Church in England.Another factor was that by dissolving and sacking the great abbeys and monasteries he became very rich as all the treasure from these establishments went into the Royal Coffers. So there you have it: love, money and power.

It was none of those. It was the need for an heir. There is every evidence that Henry loved Catherine, having been given a papal dispensation to marry his elder brother's widow. However after many miscarriages, Catherine was only able to provide a single female child. As Henry has several male children by mistresses, Henry Fitzroy being his favourite, he determined that it was his marriage with Catherine that was the issue. He felt he had no choice but to end his marriage, and asked the Pope to annul it based on an error in the original dispensation. When the pope refused Henry again felt that he had no choice but to break away from Rome. That does not mean that he became a protestant, the church of England was very catholic to begin with, and indeed parts of the modern day anglican church are indistinguishable from catholic ceremony, except for transubstantiation. For more details read the wikipedia entry, and more importantly read at least some of the books listed in the bibliography. It is fundemental to learning that it be your own work.
