What is a purpose statement?

  • i have to write a topic name on a speech i have to give and a purpose statement. i understand the first part but what exactly do i have to write about for a purpose statement. i looked it up but it was no help. thx

I would assume that a purpose statement is just that... a statement of the purpose of the speech. For example... "The purpose of my speech on the United States economy is to inform the audience of the terrible financial crisis occurring in our nation at this point in time and to propose a new solution to the problem. It is my hope that with the information I discuss today, the audience will be better informed to prepare for what is to come.... etc." That would be my guess.
