About the same as "you are known by the company you keep." "The best way to prevent trouble is to avoid it." In teenspeak - if you hang around with a gang where one or two of them pull something illegal, you will all be picked up. "Guilt by association."

TheHumbleOne

If you hang out with people with bad habits, pretty soon you may suffer like they do - even though you are not practicing the bad habits. examples: if you hang out with people in a gang, you may not commit a crime, but when the police come and gather up suspects they may take you along. while you may not sent to jail, you were still booked, fingerprinted, and spent some time in a cell. lieth down with dogs - hang out with known gang members riseth up with fleas - you got picked up in a police sweep looking for suspects even though you weren't a member of the gang and hadn't done anything wrong. The police couldn't tell by looking at you that you were any different than the other folks. hope that helps.
