What does this quote about the Scarlet Letter mean?

  • " Beauty bends to the power throughout the work, and therefore the power displayed is not always beautiful" I have to back up this quote about the Scarlet Letter in essay but I cannot seem to really get a firm interpretation of this quote. Any help would be amazing. Thank you!

  • Answer:

I don't know if this is correct but the way I interpret the quote represents vulnerability in a way. "Beauty bends to the power throughout the work," can mean various things. I take it as beauty is sometimes gone unseen and tends to blend within the everyday motives. "Therefore the power displayed is not always beautiful," means that not all beauty being portrayed as a positive thing. In turn, beauty comes in the simplest and most complex forms. It isn't always seen because we as humans tend to be blinded with the fake beauty that girls tried to attain because they wanted to be given some worth. Other times the beauty we see is so cut and watered down that it begins to lose its meaning. I have no idea if that helped you, I hope so though.
