What page is this Grapes of Wrath quote on?

Page number for a quote in Grapes of Wrath?

  • "They drove away into the darkness and the little hills of Barstow were behind them." Please tell me the significance of this quote, where in the story it takes place, anything else you think of.

  • Answer:

Yes, the page number for this quote is on page 226 all right. The significance of this quote is that, after a horribly long journey across the plains, over the mountains, through terrible times of need, enduring sickness and death, they had just crossed over into California, the supposed land of milk and honey--the promised land, so to speak. The Joads had all waited with bated breath for this; their hopes were sky high, and, at this point, had no idea that their dreams were about to be shattered.
