Answer:
1. “Not only Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for *******!” Jem stiffened. Mrs. Dubose’s shot had gone and she knew it: “Yes indeed, what has the world come to when a Finch goes against his raisings? I’ll tell you!” She put her hand to her mouth. When she drew it away, it trailed a long silver thread of saliva. “Your fathers no better than the ******* and trash he works for!” (Lee 117) 1. (analysis)This quote said by Mrs. Dubose towards Jem and Scout shows how racists she is. Mrs. Dubose and most of the towns people dislike the Finches because Atticus is a white man defending a black man. Jem and Scout stats to become aware that all this is caused by segregation. Since Atticus is defending Tom Robinson in court Mrs. Dubose starts to insult Atticus for ‘lawing for *******’ which infuriates both of his children. [Theme: The injustice of racism and segregation] 2. “There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they treid. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life” (Lee 252). 2. (analysis)The speech that Atticus shares with his children proves how much injustice and racism goes on in their town. Atticus tries to tell Jem and Scout that whatever happens between a white man and a black man, the white man will always win. Because that’s just the way it is. This shows that no matter what, there will always be people who are racist. Although people will not like it very much, but segregation will always take place. [Theme: The injustice of racism and segregation] 3. “But I want to play with Walter, Aunty, why can’t I?” She took off her glasses and stared at me. “I’ll tell you why,” she said, “Because- he – is – trash, that’s why you can’t play with him” (Lee 257). 3.(analysis)Since Aunt Alexandra’s excuse of not allowing Scout to play with Walter because she thinks he is trash proves how much segregation is going on already. The Finches and the Cunninghams are both white families, but Aunt Alexandra dislikes the Cunninghams because they are poor. Although Scout is still very young and may not understand Aunty Alexandra, she grows furious. So therefore Aunt Alexandra are one of those people on Maycomb who are always injustice. [Theme: The injustice of racism and segregation] 4. “Inside the house lived a malevolent phantom. People said he existed, but Jem and I had never seen him. People said he went out at night when the moon was down, and peeped in windows” (Lee 9). 4. (analysis)The quote said by Scout shows that since Boo Radley was isolated and locked away from the people in Maycomb, people just starts talking and gossiping about Boo Radley even if they don’t know for sure what really happened. Since Boo Radley is being isolated by himself the people outside of his house would always be talking, which gives him a bad reputation. Therefore Boo Radley will end up not having any friends at all and he’ll continue being lonely. [Theme: The damage loneliness or isolation can cause] 5. “I beat him up twice but it did no good, he only grew closer to Jem. They spent days together in the tree house plotting and planning, calling me only when they needed a third party. Our tactic treaty with Miss Maudy was that we could play on her lawn, eat her scuppernongs if we didn’t jump on the arbor, so carefully were we to preserve to delicate balance of our relationship, but Jem and Dill drove me closer to her with their behavior” (Lee 46). 5. (analysis)This quote shows that now Jem and Dill are growing closer and Scout begins to feel a bit left out. After all, it was always the three them playing together but now since Scout is being left out she has no one to play with. Scout does feel kind of lonely now that she has no where to go. Yet, because Jem and Dill aren’t close to Scout anymore, Scout becomes closer to Miss Maudie. [Theme: The damage loneliness or isolation can cause] 6. “Jem and I were trotting in our orbit mild October afternoon when our knot hole stopped us again. Something white was inside this time. Jem let me do the honors: I pulled out two small images carved in soap. One figure was a boy the other wore a crude dress” (Lee 67) 6.(analysis) This quote is important because Jem and Scout had been finding things in the knot-hole and this time they found two image carved in soap, which looked exactly like them. What Jem and Scout doesn’t know is that all the presents that they found in the knot-hole are from Boo Radley. Since Boo Radley is isolated inside the house most of the time, he has no friends and so hiding presents in the knot-hole is his only way to show his kindness to Jem and Scout.
