This shows that Atticus is not feeble and weak - he can stand up to any cause and show his strength. I belive that the mad dog stands for racism, and Atticus stands up to it, although everybody else has fears.

Atticus is a lawyer who has to show his children how to behave. He teaches Scout how to become more proper and girly. To Kill a Mockingbird is a movie and a book.
