Essentially, he's saying that neurosis * is a way of diverting suffering (bad experiences, psychological problems) into pointless, unproductive, ritual behaviours - as opposed to confronting it consciously in a productive and enlightening way. * Obsolete term for psychological disorders that manifest as anxiety, physical symptoms, weird habits, etc rather than overt break from reality.
