This proportion is found in Nature, such as Sea Shells. It is considered to be artistically pleasing when one divides a line into these parts: .38 & .62; .62 & 1.00, or 1.00 & 1.62... There is a seq in math called the fibonci seq (excuse my spelling). The seq is: 0, 1, 1 , 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233,... You add two previous numbers to get the next number in the seq. Proportions that are pleasing are: 2 to 3, 3 to 5, 5 to 8, 8 to 13, etc. In fractions that is: 2/3, 3/5, 5/8, 8/13, ... These fractions approach the number .618.... Dividing an area in 3 parts and 5 parts is more artistically pleasing then dividing an area in half. The exact numbers are approx .38 & .62 Yet, often artists just divide an area into 1/3 & 2/3's. That is quicker than measuring exactly the .38 & .62 ratios.
