How do hook up xbox live?

i got all the stuff to hook up xbox live .every time i hook it up with my computer it says dns error,i give it my computer dns and ip address ,but it keep saying the same thing then i try to change it and make up one ,but still says error.so does anyone have any ideas..oh yeah i heard if it depends on what isp we have.... if so i have cavalier internet service
