Answer:
A good technique is to not stare at the pins, but think where you want the ball to be on the arrows on the lane and look at those arrows. Also, don't worry about getting strikes only; a great way to boost your score is to focus on picking up spares. Practice lots of common setups and know how you should release and aim the ball for each type of spare you want to pick up.

one thing most commonly overlooked is your footwork...you need to concentrate on your approach as much as the rest of your game....without proper timing the rest is null and void. i wouldn't bother with different grips or using a finger tip ball until you get the basics down. i would suggest getting your own ball fit to your hand though...i tell the kids i coach if you can average 140 with a conventional grip then your probably ready for fingertips... good luck & good bowling...

Start off with finding a ball you're comfortable with, house balls have generally drilled finger holes, but each individual has different fingers, making it harder to find that 'right ball'. Learning to bowl with a single ball is good, so you understand how it reacts to the different throws and hooks you can apply. Some people however also have a ball strictly for picking spares up. Most balls today have a specially designed center to help with hooking, other balls have a symmetrical center to keep a constant speed and a straight ball. Before you worry about striking out, worry about getting the ball going where you want it to go on the lane. When you can aim a ball correctly and snipe off pins at will, then you can aim to strike. If you're the kind of bowler whom hooks, then you wan to try to aim for The Pocket (the space between the head pin and the 2 or 3 pin in the next row). Bowling a perfect game 300, isn't as important as being able to recover spares, anyone can bowl a strike, and anyone can do it consistantly, its being able to adapt to new situations thats key. Remember also, when you start to feel sore in the hand, wrist, back, fingers, or legs, its time to take a break. My personal limit is 3 games a day, and 2 sessions a week, this gives my body time to reduce the swelling and to recover. Good luck, try new things, and happy bowling.
