Can I change a traded pokemon's nickname?

I know that you usually can't change a pokemon's nickname if it was traded. But I got a piplup over the GTS and its nickname is in Japanese characters or symbols or whatever they're called. It's really annoying because I can't tell what it's name is and it looks weird with all my other pokemon.... Is there really any way at all to change a nickname?!?!?!?!?

Well i personaly, would just bread it with a ditto and get an egg. Dittos can be found on route 218 right near Jubilife city with the Poke'Radar ONLY! its hard to get but worth it.

Me too, I got a turtwig. But -- when he evolved, his nickname changed to GROTLE. See if your guy's name changes when he evolves.
