You'll find that as a new player simplicity, reliability, and ease of maintenance are going to be key. The Tippmann has all of this in spades. The gun will be somewhat "base" at first, but will hold up very well in many conditions. There are plenty of mods for the guns and just about every store sells them (and the replacement parts you'll eventually need). They're built well and can take a physical beating and still operate. I've seen one run over by a SUV play the same day with minor work by an airsmith. I have several in my armory for the casual players who come out and play with me. You could go the electro-route, but if you're patient and have a little skill, a Tippmann will do most everything you need for low-level play. Once you decide to put the $300-$500 into a low-end competitive gun, shoot me an email and we'll discuss the best choices for that market range. EDIT: And for those who say an Ion is the same price, they're wrong. A Tippmann 98c can be found almost anywhere for $159 and be ready to play. An Ion starts at $270 (if you know where to look) and will still need an electronic hopper ($20-$50) to utilize any of the upgrades you just paid for. Additionally, Ions tend to be great or crap. I've had three and all my friends have had one. Sometimes you get the luck of the draw and have one of those infallible guns... but about a third of my friends and I have had problems that required a great deal of talking to the factory to get returned and fixed. In the end, if you trust your airsmith to take care of you, an Ion can be a great choice, but if you're just getting into the sport, wait to spend the $400 bucks it's going to take to get on the field... y'know... on air and paintballs and field fees. Hope this helps... -Allen

a tippman project salvo! its a great gun, a lot like a 98, but it has a stock and better barrel. it is not full auto, but you CAN buy a kit to make it so. its a great gun. u can buy a really cheap doubble trigger kit too, but personaly i don't like them.

tippmans are good, but they're pretty expensive so if your a beginner i'd say get a spyder paintball gun

Can never go wrong with a good old Tippmann. Still if you have the money, you could just screw the 98 and move up to my favorite Tippmann, the A5. Faster rate of fire, no stock double trigger but so much more upgradeable, and overall just a great marker.

get a spyder. i had one for years. they are inexpensive and reliable. then you should step up to an autococker, not inexpensive, but man they rip. have fun out there.

It really depends on how much you really see yourself playing. If you think you're only going to go a few times a year with friends and only shoot 200 balls all day.... then a Tippmann may not be a bad choice. But if you see yourself honestly getting into this hobby, I recommend stepping up out of the cheaper blowback design markers right out of the gate. The Vibe that was mentioned is a decent choice, or the Smart Parts Ion. I've personally owned and played with the Tippy 98 custom E and the Ion MANY times. The Ion costs about the same as the regular 98 custom but it's much faster right out of the box, lighter, MUCH more quite, and it's electropneumatic design gives you less kick and increased efficiency. I feel maintenance is about the same. Neither are "easy". The Tippmann's require you to use an allen wrench to remove 7-8 bolts all along the marker and split the entire thing in half down the center. Being careful to watch out for flying springs. The tippmanns also have a slot cut in the side to allow the bolt pin to slide back and forth (nature of a blowback). This easily allows dirt/debris right into the marker. The A5 people are recommending takes all the worse parts about the 98, and doubles them. Harder yet to break down and clean, and the cyclone feeding system EATS AIR like crazy. Get the Ion and spend a little time learning how it operates. Trust me. 6 months from now, you'll thank me a hundred times over. Twice the marker at the same price. It's a no brainer.

Tippmann makes the easiest guns to use and fix. A Tippmann 98 is a great place to start. You do not need a double trigger. If you feel that your finger can not get enough shots off then go with a response trigger. Ebay is a good place to find a once with a decent price. I would recommend you sticking with this type of gun for the first year because as you are around other players you will see all the choices and then be able to make a better informed decision when you want to spend a bit more money.

The Tippman semi automatic is the game standard here in Ireland. Its a fair price and very reliable....
