What are the theories of Dark Matter and Dark Energy?

• when was dark matter and dark energy formed? theories of how they came about and what are they? what do they do? just curious...

  Physicists believe that energy cannot be formed or created, only transferred into different types so I can't really say how dark energy formed you'll just have to accept that it's been around for an infinite amount of time... When physicists looked to the skies and first discovered that the Universe is expanding, they couldn't tell where the energy for this expansion is coming from..... so they suggested dark energy, which they're trying to detect, but can't because our instruments aren't sensitive enough :( When physicists where able to calculate the mass of galaxies, they discovered that that the masses of all the celestial bodies wasn't enough to generate a large gravitational field, so they suggested dark matter to fill in the gaps.
