Help finding mass and center of mass?

Physics help with center of mass?

  • You are holding a shopping basket at the grocery store with two 0.60 kg cartons of cereal at one end of the basket. The basket is 0.76 m long. Where should you place a half gallon of milk (1.8 kg) so that the center of mass (COM) of your groceries is at the center of the basket? I did this by problem by using the equation: (m1)(d)=(m2)(d) (2)(.6)(.76/2) = (m2)(1.8) - i multiplied m1 by 2 because there are two cartons and divided the distance by two because the object is in the center so its half the distance. - After solving i got: M2= .253 .253+ (.76/2)= .63 m from the center of the basket, opposite the cartons of cereal. but .63 but it isn't correct... Can anyone help? Thanks!

  • Answer:

Why add 0.76/2 onto 0.253? The answer should be 0.253, from the centre as you found.
