What is the average amount of money spent on gas in the U.S?

Why do some people complain about the amount of money spent on the LHC ? ?

• They say that the money could be better spent on starving children or on a cure for cancer. However, the money spent is only a fraction of the amount spent on the Olympic Games. Do these people recognize that the purpose of science is not only to fix problems, but to garner new knowledge of the world around us. The question "How did we get here," is one of biggest questions in human history. There is so much we still don't know about the universe, why should we refrain from being less ignorant about it ? To paraphrase Stephen Hawkings : We are just an advanced breed of apes who inhabit a minor planet of a very average star, but we can understand the universe, and that makes us very special.

  Some people are just ignorant. In fact, MOST people seem to be ignorant (but the young-earth creationists are especially ignorant). One person actually said that cancer could be cured completely with the cost that it took to build the LHC... which is just ludicrous. I agree with you completely, and I am very excited about the LHC. Don't mind them. Their lives are meaningless anyways.
