Why is my plasma Ball so dim?

My Plasma ball exploded, why did this happen?

  • I had a plasma ball in my converted attic, that has no velux blind. I hadnt been in the room for 7 days, but I know the ball was ok when I last seen it. It hadnt been turned on for donkeys, years actually, and was not plugged in. But when I went back into the room, the ball was completly shattered with glass everywhere!! Why did this happen, do you think the sunlight might have caught it? no one was near it, of that I'm sure. Is there gas inside them, and it just, combusted? If yes, does that mean these things are dangerous??? SOrry for all the questions, but this has really puzzled me!

  • Answer:

    I came and burst it.

A plasma ball has a near vacuum in it. If it is broken for whatever reason it will implode due to the pressure of the atmosphere. The gas can't burn. Maybe the sunlight stressed out the glass which had a catastrophic failure.

heat in you attic or direct sunlight could have but odd its been fine until now.. attic type critters, like squirrel and mice ,since the weather has gotten colder critters find ways in,could this have hppened.. there are some warnings about them but usually when plugged in because of static charges they build up but unplugged shouldn't have built up anything..

Hah! I don't know about a vacuum! electric lamps (not a bulb, let's use the correct word here) and the like have an inert gas like Argon in them. Vacuum or pressure would cause stress. there is nothing magical here, somebody needs to own up

It can't have been a nice thing to come in to have to clear it all up. Bustup mate, I've always called it a bulb too though I am familiar with the term "Lamp" How about headlamp bulb?

This is actually a question: Does the ball still work even though the glass is not around it? Does it shock you or anything? Or did you not try plugging it in?

Bloody hell! I thought you meant ball lightening.
