How do you use other symbols or fonts for answering scientific questions on Yahoo Answers?
-
Such as degree symbol and fraction in lower case as in ½at^2 (which I copied from a question). Thanks Bill

Answer:
These are unicode characters, which replaces ASCII and has many thousands of characters. But the keyboards still have the same characters. I just keep a text file with all the ones I use in it, and copy from there. Some, I can get with option + key, but I have a macintosh, and it has always had this feature. ∫ ≈∼ ± ≠ √ ∛ ∜ ∂ ∇ ∆ ≤ ≥ ∼ ∞ ∝ × º ≈ ± ≠ ⁰ ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ₀ ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₅ ₆ ₇ ₈ ₉ ⁻ £ ¢ ¥ € ½ ² ½ ⅓ ⅔ ¼ ¾ ⅜ ⇌ ➔ ⬅Å⬆⬇ Ⅽ ⟫ ( ⌘ Å ▼ — | ( — ⎍ ⎎ ⌠ ⌡ ≈ ≃ ≈ ≠ ∠ — ▽ ε ω θ ρ Ω µ Ω Δ ∑ π α β γ δ Σ η λ ξ φ ϕ ρ σ ψ .

I think a lot of it is people using the character map, you can find that under programs-> accessories-> system tools -> character map. Other than that there might be some embedded script which I don't know. Normally I'm just too lazy so I use spaces, parenthesis and hope people take the time to correctly interpret what I've written (assuming I wrote it correctly, that is!) edit: when you get the character map open, look at the bottom right for whatever you select, it will show you the keystroke. Like you asked about the degree symbol, hold down alt and hit 0186.

I use 2 ways: For ³ γ λ ρ ω ∂ ∆ ≠, I use the character map as described above. For nearly everything else, I use Alt+(nnn) where nnn is a number keyed in on the numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard only. Ex: Alt+251 = √, Alt+26 = →, Alt+253 = ², etc. I typed in a whole bunch of these, jotted down the ones I liked, and taped them to my monitor. After a while, you won't even have to look at them....
