Do you need Physics to become a doctor?
-
I took the three sciences - Chemistry, Biology and Physics, thinking that you need them all to become a doctor. Is it true you only need Biology and Chemistry to get into medical school? It does make sense if Physics isn't part of it cos it has nothing to do with doctoring. I am not aiming to become a doctor, I was thinking more about the lines of Psychology or Physiotherapy. I've been battling my grandfather who is in charge of schooling, to let me drop Physics as I am rubbish at it, and take Physical Education instead. Just a question. I'm still only 14 so I haven't had my GCSE's yet. But I DEFINETLY want to do something with Psychology. Thanks

Answer:
I think that they like it if you have at least one year of physics.

Most medical admissions tests do involve some physics, so having a decent physics background is very useful. Normally chemistry and biology are indeed more important, but that doesn't mean physics isn't assessed. If you had to drop one, I'd drop physics, but I wouldn't drop it if it wasn't necessary- it would definitely be a lot better for getting into medicine than physical education. It is not true that physics has nothing to do with medicine. There are several medical applications that involve physics. Radiation therapy is probably the most obvious example (in fact, radiotherapy departments employ physicists to help with treatment planning and other roles, as it's so important for the field), but there are others. Either way, physics knowledge is tested on most medical admissions tests. I'll also tell you now that however sure you may be, don't be surprised if you find yourself doing something completely different later on. I'd say at least 9 out of 10 students (myself included) end up following career paths that they had no idea they would end up in when they left high school. Most of my fellow students were sure that they would end up in one field, only to do something completely different in the end.
