How to find density using slope method - chem help!! plss?
-
ok so i did a lab and we are suppose to find the density of water, corn syrup, and ethly alcohol. So for the lab from our data we got mass of 12.853 g and volume of 30 mL for corn syrup. mass of 7.992 g and volume of 30 mL. Ethly alchol of 6.381 g and 30 mL. so the question asks : Find the density of all these liquids (water, corn syrup, and ethnol) using the slope method. - i dont noe what the slope method is next to question is like the method i think but i dont understand it has a traingle Y/ traiangle X. <--what does that mean . can someone help me slove this problem . and if someone wants to help me more, after finding that question how to i get the percentage of error based on this question for each of the liquids. ~Sorry if this isn't making sense but i rly need help since my chem teacher is soo stupid and always off topic ALSO if you can help me on these questions: 1. If you had a bathtub filled with water , would the density of ALL of the fluid in the tub be the same as only 1 gram of liquid. 2. What is the unit to describe the property of DENSITY? aka. what are the units 3. What effect does size have on density of objects made of the same material? 4. What effect does shape have on density of objects made of the same material? 5. What is the realationship between slope of lines (steepness) in this investigation and the density of the substances? ---- Also how do you know on the graph which graph has more density. Like on my paper there are 3 graphs, and how do i know which graph has the greatest density. how do i tell by the lines? im confused THANKS SO MUCH!! (you don't have to answer all the questions only the questions you want too) thanks again

Answer:
lets say that you have an equation y = mx + b which is a straight line with slope m and y-intercept b taking the derivative gives dy/dx = m which is the slope. Most probably you have been given a formula so that you are able to use this slope to find the density. I suspect that this formula is M = rho*V where mass of material, rho is the density and V is volume of material. This is similar to the equation of a straight line with y = M, x = V, m = rho and b = 0. Assuming you have done multiple experiments with different volumes giving different masses, you need to plot these points on a graph and draw a straight line from which you can find the slope from taking two points on the line and taking the ratio (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) which is equivalent to rho = (M2-M1)/(V2-V1). The error can be estimated by comparing the average values (that is the line) to the highest and lowest values. 1. Yes; take a sample of 0.1L, 1 L, 10L then measure the mass and divide the masses by the volumes, this should give you equal densities for all three samples. 2. take the previous formula M = rho*V where M is in kg and V is in m^3 then rho = M/V = kg/m^3. Other used units are g/L, g/mL, kg/L, etc. these only differ by a unit conversion factor. 3. None; density has an effect on the size of materials but not the other way around. 4. None; density does not depend on container geometry, but is for example dependent on temperate and somewhat on pressure. 5. see above The line with the steepest slope has the greatest density.
