What happens physiologically to the body when you die?

Athiests: what happens to the body energy when you die??

  • The most basic law of thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy. Since it is obvious we all have body energy to do work, what happens to this body energy once you die since it cannot be destroyed nor created?? (please don't give me a dumb answer like static electricity or anything like that)

  • Answer:

The same as happens to 'believers'

I don't know... Where does a dog's energy go when it dies? Must mean there's a puppy heaven, right?

i know, i took chemistry. Traditionally we would bury bodies straight into the ground. The energy from our body when it decomposes goes to the ground to fertilize it and it releases gases into the air. Worms and animals could eat our bodies and that would be transferring the energy to them. Even if we were buried into a casket, as we were decomposing the gases from our body would be trapped inside.

What happens to the energy in a car when you turn it off? It just remains as fuel. Your body becomes fuel to feed the organisms that decompose it.

It goes into decomposers like bacteria in our body. Why do you think dead things bloat? The decomposition process releases gas which gets trapped by the body. Trust me, none of the energy is destroyed, plus, wouldn't the existence of an afterlife violate the first law of thermodynamics, since the energy that could have been used to feed the bacteria would be gone once your soul was transported wherever?

Whatever happens to a dead animal when it dies. Stuff eats it. Stuff can be bugs, plants, micro-organisms, detritus-eaters. Nothing really goes to waste even when we are buried, because the shifting landmasses ensure that we'll get squeezed into fossil fuel for future automobile-drivers. The earth is more dynamic than you think.

We are just the machines that use energy. The actual energy is stored as fat, glycogen, etc. in our body. When we die, that stored potential energy is further consumed by bacteria (or maggots) and used to continue the life cycle of other beings. Our bodies themselves deteriorate in the ground and is used to make other things on earth (over a long time) Nothing here is related to spirituality, just talking about energy stored in the body.

....it is decomposed by other living things like worms bacteria ect... the body stores energy in a chemical form, and this is like how we gain energy from eating other animals... the human body (or that of any animal) isnt a massive battery that simply gets rid of all stored potential energy when expended... the body simply shuts down when the brain and/ or major vital organs cease to function... to decompose and continue the cycle of nature... this is simple science, not a matter of religion vs science... where the 'soul' or consciousness of a person goes is still (and I believe forever will be) a mystery to science... (btw i am religious AND in favor of eatin' tasty critters).

Ok, I'm not an atheist, but I don't think God is supernatural, I think God is "natural" (let's see any of us create the universe). You are however trying to assume an old falsehood here - the energy is not destroyed - it simply dissipates into the universe, and if the potential nuclear forces of the remains are taken into consideration, then they too are "potential energy". The energy is neither created or destroyed, but it can be transformed into other forms. So your point is???

which energy are you talking about? the physical energy or the mysctial?
