What are the causes and consequences of the Aral sea disaster?
-
1) The Aral Sea region is in difficulty due to a reason other than the drying up and desertification of the sea, what is this? 2) Can the drying up of the sea have positive consequences? If so which? 3) What are the projects to revive the Aral Sea? Did they succeed/work? Why/why not?
-
Answer:
1) Diversion of water for other uses in the up stream area of the drainage system. 2) No positive consequences. 3) Partition the lake to try to preserve water in the deepest place. Ultimately won't work because extra water will be removed by upstream communities eventually leaving none to enter the lake. The proposals all fail because the headwaters of the streams that drain into the lake are in different countries than the lake. It needs an international solution.
