Why does Canada get Southern Ontario? Shouldn't it be ours?
-
If you look at a map of Canada, there is an area called Southern Ontario that goes really far south compared to the rest of Canada. New York, PA, Ohio, and Michigan surround it. It's where most of Canada's population is, and they have big cities there ... but why does Canada get that area? It would make more sense if we had it because geographically, it should be part of the U.S, since it sort of sticks into our country. Also, if we had Southern Ontario we would own all of the great lakes, Toronto, and all of Niagara Falls. People who live in New York and want to travel to Michigan, can travel right through that area IF they have a passport ... but what about the Americans who don't? They would have to go all the way around through PA and Ohio. So, why don’t we have that area? Shouldn’t we annex it?

Answer:
Tried and failed, google "War of 1812". Good luck with that annex thing. Actually, the "Three Amigos" gathered in Montebello, Quebec to discuss exactly that. Here's what they decided: Canada gets Alaska. US gets Southern Ontario. Mexico gets part of Texas, from Eagle Pass to Galveston, just to get rid of the part that "goes really far south compared to the rest of" the US. Hawaii gets listed on Ebay tomorrow. (to cover the cost of the Quebec summit) US and Mexico offered no help with regards to the Russians and their Arctic land claim, so we're over there now settling it with an 8 game hockey series. Google "super series". We're up two games. (We'll save you, Santa!) Joking aside, who died and put you in charge? You see something you think you want, and you just take it? Maybe instead of trying to re-align the countries, you should donate your atlas to Lauren Upton, google "Miss Teen South Carolina geography screwup", and pick up a history book.

You know, this is a very telling question. Just a few days ago there was a question in this Geography section asking why everything in the US is falling apart (education, bridges, etc). It seems to have mysteriously disappeared (at least, I can't find it anymore), but to me, someone who lives outside the USA, this explains it. Why must everything belong to the US? What makes the people of the USA so special in the world that they always want what belongs to other people - that they believe they can take whatever they want (oil, land, agricultural markets, cultural identities, political beliefs) from others? It's this obsession with self enrichment and self importantce which is causing the decline in a sense of shared responsibility, shared community and concern for others. This makes the rest of the world wonder what makes the US tick.. .and it reduces the social cohesion and internal integrity of the American nation. You can't have Southern Ontario because it doesn't belong to you. Period. You have enough. Period.

Just wait a decade or so. When the U.S. starts to run out of water and oil we Canadians can look forward to being 'liberated' so the U.S. can come in and 'manage' our resources for us. Southern Ontario will be yours eventually. By the way, Canada has half the fresh water on earth and we're second only to Saudi Arabia in oil. Yep, it's only a matter of time.

Well, I was trying to figure out a nice way to answer this question, but then I read joachim_mika's answer... And his answer says it all... Just face it... Get a passport and get out there. Accept the facts that there is a world outside of the U.S.

The international boundary line there is right down the middle of the great lakes (Huron, Erie, and Ontario) and the St. Lawerance River. Water is probably one of the easiest ways to divide territory due to you always know where it's at, without looking too hard. And yes at one time we did fight over it (Battle of 1812 I think).

"Shouldn't we annex it?" .... That's funny! :-D I think a few of the locals would have something to say about such action. The reason the area is Canadian is because the early Americans were unsuccessful in their attempts to "invade" Canada. Besides, who's to say that New England isn't jutting into Canadian territory? And don't get me started on Alaska and the pipeline! ;-)

Annexation of portions of a sovereign nation isn't exactly an option. What about Alaska? Or Hawaii? Why should they be part of the United States? Hawaii could easily be its own nation, it's so far away. Alaska should be part of Canada, by the logic you use. Maybe you should propose to the Canadian government that we swap them Alaska for Southern Ontario. If this question weren't so sad, I'd laugh.
