How Can I add Latitude, Longitude dynamically in Javascript?

I'm a Geography major, should I change?

  • I'm really stressed out at this point. I am a Geography major and a Senior at university. I switched to this major not too long ago, and I need to stick with it if I am to ever graduate, however, I find it extremely difficult and tomorrow is the last day to add/drop classes without penalty. Today in class the teacher handed us our first assignment. It has many questions and I can't seem to do any of them. For example, it asks "at the equator, which is a greater distance, one degree of latitude, or one degree of longitude?" I really do not know what method one should use to figure this out. I can guess, but I need to know why. Next, it wants me to find how many feet is in a Nautical Mile. It gives me the fact that the Equatorial Circumference of Earth is 24,901, so I divided it by 360, then divided that by 60, and then multiplied that number by 5280 in order to get it in feet. However my answer is 6086 ft (and a decimal with a few more numbers) and a nautical mile, according to Wikipedia is 6076.12 ft. HOW COULD I BE OFF BY 10 FEET? What am I doing wrong? Next, it wants to know how many statute miles is one degree of longitude at the equator, so I just divided 24,901 (equatorial circumference) by 360. Is this right? How am I supposed to know, this stuff isn't even related to the stuff that's in our textbook ;_; Then it asks the same question, how many statute miles is one degree of longitude at the equator of the moon. I am assuming that I can follow the same procedure, except dividing the equatorial circumference of the moon by 360.

  • Answer:

Definitely not. Geography is a broadly applicable interdisciplinary study. If I were you, I would look into GIS. That's supposed to be the new dot-com boom.

If you are a senior and can not do the math you outlined here, switch to Drivers Ed and study hard pay attention. Maybe by the time you graduate you can land a job driving for Google Earth maybe in Iran or the jungles of Costa Rica. We always need a few well rounded junior staffers. Carry a cheat sheet and a small calculator. Did you or your parents pay for your education? You sound asleep at the switch. I paid for my own about 50 years ago.
