Where was Atlantis?

Where is ATLANTIS? legend? myth?or could it have been a real place?

  • could the canary islands really be where atlantis was? was it really an advanced civilization? why were the nazis trying to locate it?

  • Answer:

Many myths originate in real events, though not necessarily so. I've always been fascinated with the legendary Atlantis. Certainly there are sunken cities in many places around the world. However, one would have though that a truly advanced civilization would have left a bigger "footprint" in terms of artifacts unquestionably produced by an ancient technology --- unless that was rather exaggerated. One researcher believes that vestiges of Atlantis might be found under the waters of the landmass we call Indonesia/Malaya/Philippines ... that Krakatau, in a mammoth earlier eruption, may have destroyed the populated areas. After all, any place beyond the Pillars of Hercules was in the great Atlantic Ocean. Within the Mediterranean, the Minoan Civilization, brought down by the Santorini/Thera eruption over 3400 years ago, would fit the legend, assuming that Plato exagerrated "900 years before" to "9000 years before", perhaps by confusing the Egyptian numerals for 100 and 1000. In any case, it's a wonderful legend on so many levels

Atlantis (ancient Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, "Atlantic island") is the name of an island first mentioned and described by the classical Greek philosopher Plato. According to him this island, lying "beyond the pillars of Hercules", was a naval power, having conquered many parts of Europe and Africa. Soon after a failed invasion of Athens, Atlantis sank in the waves "within a day and a night" after a natural catastrophe happened 9000 years before Plato's time. As a story embedded in Plato's dialogs, Atlantis is commonly seen as a myth created by Plato to back up a previously invented theory with "real" facts. Although this function of the Atlantis myth seems to be clear, it is disputed whether and how much Plato's account was inspired by older traditions. Some scholars argue Plato drew upon memories of past events such as the Thera eruption or the Trojan War, while others insist that he took inspiration of contemporary events like the destruction of Helike in 373 BC or the failed Athenian invasion on Sicily in 415-413 BC. The possible existence of Atlantis was actively discussed throughout the classical antiquity, but it was usually rejected and occasionally parodied. While basically unknown during the Middle Ages, the Atlantis myth was rediscovered by Humanists at the very beginning of modern times. Plato's description inspired the utopian works of several Renaissance writers, like Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis". More than ever, Atlantis inspires today's literature, from science fiction to comic books.

There is no hard evidence to tell where Atlantis is. The Nazis were trying to locate it because they believe atlantians were a powerful white race and Atlantis was the birthplace for the Caucasian race. Current researchers believe they have evidence in the Mediterranean sea and in the Caribbean. I'm sure it will be a long time before they either decide if it is or if it's not Atlantis.

In 1938, Heinrich Himmler organized a search in Tibet to find a remnant of the white Atlanteans. According to Julius Evola (Revolt Against the Modern World, 1934), the Atlanteans were Hyperboreans -- Nordic supermen who originated on the North pole (see Thule). Similarly, Alfred Rosenberg (The Myth of the Twentieth Century, 1930) spoke of a "Nordic-Atlantean" or "Aryan-Nordic" master race.

i just saw an interesting show on the history channel about this... it seems that scientists have discovered a large palace on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean sea... the shape size and structure of the palace was larger and far more complex then anything else that would have been around during the same time.. this would be a more logical place for Atlantis because it was first described by the Greek philosopher Plato.. it couldn't have been anything outside of the Mediterranean because the Greeks never left the Mediterranean sea... scientists still aren't sure if there is a real Atlantis the evidence is inconclusive... its just a myth.. and the bit about nazi's tryin to locate it? well the Nazi's were a bunch of crazy people lead by hitler...
