What celebrations happen in New York City on 4th July?

What do you believe will happen if a 7.2 quake was in New York City?

  • What do you think would happen? Tell me some reasons on what you think would happen. So it sounds realistic what you said, explain why each reason is true. When people usually think of New York City and a quake. They do not mix. I would like to here peoples reasons.

  • Answer:

NYC has a lot of old fixed masonry construction. A lot of those old brownstones will sustain significant damage and many may collapse. Newer buildings with steel reinforcement will stand up ok, but a lot of glass windows may shatter from the flexing of those buildings. Any bulding built before the mid 1930's would be at risk of majpr damage. A few might collapse. But even newer buildings would take some damage. The bridges and tunnels would be ok, except the Brooklyn Bridge, which has those masonry towers. I expect the people in NYC have not been educated on what to do when a quake hits. If people run out into the streets while the tall buildings are still shaking, there will be a lot of death & injury from the falling glass. A lot of the gas piping in NY is pretty old. I would expect a lot of fires, like in SF in 1906. Fires may do more damage than the quake. I'm pretty sure most of NY is built on bedrock, so there won't be the liquification effect you get in other cities. Any area that has construction on soft soil, especially masonry construction, will experience significant damage. That's what I'd expect.
