How many countries are there in the world?

How many countries are ther in the world?

  • Hi, I'm a bit confused. I read an article in the newspaper about a person who visited 245 countries in 7 years and he was awarded with Limca Books of records. However, i just googled and noted that there are only 193-195 countries in the world. I'm quite surprised to see this. How can he visit 245 countries considering the fact that there are only 195 countries in the world. Please advise.

  • Answer:

It depends. Some territories are recognized, some are not. Some places do not recognize Israel and instead replace it with smaller Palestinian countries. China claims Taiwan is part of the People's Republic, while the United States believes Taiwan is it's own country (and would prefer Taiwan having ownership of all of China). There however, are only 193 members of the United Nations, but countries like Kosovo and Vatican City are not members for religious or political reasons. There are also 61 colonies or territories, and some of them claim they are independent but pretty much none of them are supported. Right now the closest answer is 196.

I would say 193 because there are 193 UN member states. When a state joines the United Nations, it means it's fully recognized by EVERYONE else in the World. That would mean full sovereignty and freedom to the country. There are still some unrecognized territories which are not considered countries nor dependencies: Kosovo, South Ossetia, Taiwan, Western Sahara, Vatican City...

196 countries in the world but only 193 countries are currently recognized by the United Nations ...still there is independent countries like Kosovo and Vatican City is not recognized by the UN.So the Number of countries in this world is 196 as in year 2011....
