Why do rain clouds appear black?

Why do the Gray clouds look red at night?

  • rain bearing gray clouds appear gray in day time. while after sun sets, at night the same cloud apper orangish or redish in color, why? is it due to refraction of sunlight insolating on the other face on the earth?

    close....how about the sunlight refracting and reflecting off the drops of moisture in the clouds.....at the altitude of the clouds...the sun hasn't "set" yet...it is only from your perspective on the ground...which leads to the longer wave lengths being perceived....for the same reason, sometimes green is seen

( causes refraction, Ozon layers that) which will lallow the light to pass through) and when the light hit upon objects such has clouds will give a glow in the midnight) again it depends upon the depth and the intensity of the cloud Mass. Exercise: Use a powerful small tourch light turned on and held tight in your thumb. The light does not glow but you will see the other side of the thumb glowing red.

That is due to the increase amount of atmosphere that the light has to travel through to get to your eyes. It is coming to you at a slightly horizontal angle at dusk.
