Yes. There are two inhabited islands that are about 2.4 miles from each other. Little Diomede is part of Alaska and Big Diomede is part of Russia. Wales, Alaska is the westernmost city on the mainland. Uelen is the easternmost settlement in Russia and the closest Russian settlement to the United States. Wales is about 61 miles away from Uelen as the bird flies. You can see pictures on Google Earth.

Only some islands owned by Russia. You can only see 22 miles on a clear day on the sea. I remember being told in Aruba that we should be able to see Venezuela on a clear day. It was 16 miles away, and I never saw it.
