What does "X" stand for in "LAX?

1/3x+1/2=11/12 what does x stand for? 1.5x+9=4.5, what does x stand for?

  • I need help with these to. 2(x+2)=3(x-8) x+5=-7 -4/7x=6 x/3+2=89 3a+13=9a-8 15n+9=21 2(x+6)=-2(x+-4) -(x+2)-2x=-2(x+1)

  • Answer:

    Yahoo's formatting messes this up, but if you cut-and-paste it into Word or Notepad, then use font Courier New it should make more sense. First question 1 1 11 ---- + ---- = ---- 3x 2 12 4 6x 11x ----- + ----- = ----- 12x 12x 12x 4 + 6x = 11x - 6x = -6x ------------- 4 = 5x divide both sides by 5 4 --- = x = First answer 5 ****** Second question 1.5x + 9 = 4.5 - 9 = -9.0 ---------------- 1.5x = -4.5 divide both sides by '1.5' x = (-4.5)/(1.5) = (-3) x = -3 = Second answer

If you go to a math tutorial site (there's usually one mentioned in your textbook) they can teach you better than I can.

It's been a while and I don't remember off-hand how to do this. BUT I can point you in the right direction to a web-site that helped me get from pre-algebra all the way through algebra: purplemath.com. x + 5 = -7 You have to subtract 5 from both sides. If the 5 was - 5, then you would add 5 to both sides. You have to do the opposite to move it to the other side. Example: if the number is multiplied, then you have to divide it from both sides. If it is divided, you have to multiply it to both sides. The goal is to isolate the variable. To do that you have to get the numbers all on one side and the variable by itself. After subtracting 5 from both sides, we have: x = - 12. You can check this by plugging -12 into the variable: -12 + 5 = -7, which is true so our answer is correct. 15n + 9 = 21 Subtract 9 from both sides. This leaves: 15n = 12 Hopefully you already know that the coefficient is the 15 and the variable is n. The fact that they are written together with no sign indicates that they are to be multiplied. Example: If we already knew the value of n, say it's 2, then it would be written like 15 * 2 or 15(2). So, now we know that 15 is to be multiplied and to get it to the other side, so that we can isolate the variable, we have to divide. We also have to assign it a negative because it is a positive on the left side. So we divide 15n from - 15 on the left and we are left with n. Then we divide 12 from -15 on the right and we are left with -3. So the answer would be: n = -3 Check it: 15(-3) + 9 = 21 12 + 9 = 21 21 = 21 is true so our answer is correct. You are going to have to simplify some of these problems before you solve them. Don't forget the order of operations. I've included a link, in case you might need a refresher. http://www.purplemath.com/modules/orderops.htm
