Why do people in the UK not know how many US States there are?

  • I used to live in the UK for some years. Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. When people talked about the USA, the topic of how many States came up. 52, 87, 35, 20, and so on. The most common numbers were 35, 52, and 37! The really odd thing was, UK people would always INSIST I was wrong. But I'm FROM the USA. Why wouldn't I know how many States we have! A 3 year old knows that here! There are 50 US States. Why don't people in the UK know that? And why do ya'll think I DON'T know the number?

Most people in the UK know there are 50 States. Few of us care.

I've ALWAYS known exactly how many states there are in the USA. Don't generalise the entire UK from a few people that you have asked. Let me ask you something, why do Americans insist that Scotland is England and that Northern Ireland is a different country and that we use the Euro in the UK? Guess what? Northern Ireland is in the UK, not Ireland. And we don't use the Euro! Let me ask you as well. How many counties exist in the UK? I guarantee there are more British people who know about the US states than there Americans who know about British counties. And in case you don't know (because I don't expect most Yanks to know), a county is a regional governmental area similar to a US state. It's NOT like a county in the USA. It's generally accepted around the world that Americans are terrible at world geography and that it's not the British. Come on then "asshole". Tell us how many counties there are here. WITHOUT Googling.

So you in the USA will know how many counties there are in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, Ireland is not.

Im 32 from Scotland and i could have told you there was 50 states in the U.S.A when i was about 5 years old . And since when was Ireland part of the UK?

There are 51 states in the USA. The 51st is the terrible state that they are in, losing their Triple A credit rating.

Do you know how many counties there are here in the UK? Just as some people here aren't bothered about how many states you have, Americans aren't bothered about things to do with the UK.

That's very judgemental, classing all the uk of not knowing how many states there are.. Believe it or not many people do know.

Nerd moment: There are actually only 46 states becasuse Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia and commonwealths. To answer the origional question; i don't know anyone who doesn't know this but I guess it just isn't relavent. America isn't very important compared to how most Americans think and it doesn't look like it's going to be a superpower for much more time. Do average Americans know about British or any other European politics.

Don't try and insult the uk people just because one or two didn't know. So how many yanks know what principalities make up the uk, yer a lot isn't it.
