194 (unless you don't count Taiwan, in which case 193; or Vatican City, in which case 192).

I really, really hate to say this but: it depends! It depends on what you mean by country, and it also depends on who you ask. There are 245 political entities currently; which includes everything from Taiwan (not recognized by China) to the Vatican to "dependent territories" such as Greenland (Denmark). Different numbers pop up when someone inquires or reads about the number of countries in the world. Each source you use often yields a different answer. Ultimately, the best answer is that there are 194 countries in the world.

Almost 200 sounds about right. Montenegro joined the United Nations in June 2006 to bring the total of member nations to 192. Any other countries would be considered dependent or unrecognized by the international community.
