Why is Russia commonly called a European country?
-
I notice that Russia is often called a European country despite most of it being in Asia. I'm guessing it's called European because it's culture is more European than Asian and its people are mostly white. But I'm not sure and was wondering if anyone could tell me why?

Answer:
Historically and culturally, Russia has been tightly connected with the rest of Europe. Look on the map and see the original location of Russia some 10 centuries ago, it's in Europe. The Asian part of Russia was conquered and annexed later, you can view it as a Russian colony, in a manner of speaking. You never thought of calling Great Britain an Asian or African country because most of its land used to be in Asia and Africa. Spain has never been called an American country although it used to own large areas in the New World. The heart of the Russian culture lies in Europe, thus, it is a European country.

I believe the vast majority of the population is located in the European portion

1) Because Slavic peoples in common (the Russians in particular) historically are European peoples. 2) Because most of the population of Russia lives in its European part. 3) Because you're too lazy to use search function; otherwise you'd see that the questions exactly like yours were already answered here more than 9000 times. P.S.: Despite the existing tradition to call my country European, the fact is Russia is the EURASIAN country (and an Empire, yes — always). Furthermore, it's a different civilization — Russian — neither Western (European) nor Eastern (Asian). .

Russia sort of...it used to be much smaller than it is now. It began in the western portion (European Russia). It expanded into the east over the centuries, building an Empire. Culturally it is western. The "Russians" are Slavic, like Poles or Hungarians.

Because a vast majority of Russians live in the European area.

Most of Russian people lives in West side of the country, it's means in Europe. They are only "on map" in Europe, in real life they are not in europe.
