Evolution proven? Missing link found?
-
As a skeptic of religion i want to know the opinions of evolution. It seems many people don't believe that we have found a missing link. Could anyone clarify what it is? Or are we not related to primates at all.

Answer:
Humans ARE primates (that's not up for debate) and we've found plenty of missing links, you can take your pick. For the fossil anthropoidea on this chart (which excludes primates in the suborders prosimii and tarsioidea): http://www.globalchange.umich.edu/gctext/Inquiries/Inquiries_by_Unit/Unit_5_files/image017.jpg Every branch represents a common ancestor for the lines of descent that rise above it. You can find other charts that vary somewhat, this is because we don't know all the species involved or all of their exact relationships but we know enough of our evolutionary cousins to paint a pretty accurate picture. There are still plenty of detractors (religious not scientific) but if you press them, most can't even define what a primate is so their opinion has little weight.

Here, meet some of our relatives: Sahelanthropus tchadensis. 6 to 7 million years ago Ardipithecus ramidus - 5 to 4 million years ago Australopithecus afarensis - 4 to 2.7 million years ago Australopithecus africanus - 3.0 to 2.0 million years ago Australopithecus robustus - 2.2 to 1.0 million years ago Homo habilis - 2.2 to 1.6 million years ago Homo erectus - 2 to 0.4 million years ago Homo sapiens - 400,000 to 200,000 years ago (Homo neandertalensis - 200,000 to 30,000 years ago) Homo sapiens sapiens - 130,000 years ago to present Before them, between 7 and 10 million years ago, there was our common ancestor with the modern apes. This is what is romantically called "The missing link". Not only are we related to primates, but we are, in fact, apes. We share 98% of our DNA with chimps. Our blood is almost identical, including many of the blood groups etc. There should be no doubt that we are related. Resistance to evolution is faith based, not scientific. .

I daresay, some of your thoughts regarding evolution seem to be based on myths. First of all, you can be a religious person and find various aspects of evolution plausible without contradicting your own religious beliefs-- I can. I would be an idiot to not see that allopatric and sympatric speciation have empirical merit. I would also be an idiot to not see that there's a lot of empirical evidence in microevolution as well. As far as the "missing link" there are various links that neeed to be found and clarified. As of today, depending on what branch of evolution we are talking and the species, time, geographical location, etc. some things have been shown to have gradual progression that is based heavily on evidence, yet other things are questionable and still need some research. Keep in mind that evolution is a theory that has been supported by a lot of evidence, but there will eventually be evidence to shut down various hypotheses through the scientific method. Humans and primates have similar DNA and evolved from a COMMON ANCESTOR, but that does not mean that we are distinctly "related" in the sense of being related to your cousins. It just means that humans and primates came from a common ancestor, and over time the species split and resulted in separate species following different developmental paths. Evolution is based on science, evidence, and the scientific method, NOT "opinions". The opinions you get are simply from what people believe (or don't) about evolution. But keep in mind evolution is based on science and hypotheses that will always go through the stages of alterations based on new evidence.

The major problem with the "Missing Link" argument against evolution is that it is actually insoluble. Picture two species: A, which existed 10 million years ago, and C, which is alive now. From comparative anatomy, we strongly suspect that A is the ancestor of C. But anti-evolutionists can (and do) insist that we find the "missing link" between the two. This is difficult, as fossilization is a rare event, and only captures a tiny proportion of organisms which die. But let's say we get lucky, and find a fossil of species B from 5 million years ago, which is anatomically halfway between A and C. All we've done, as far as anti-evolutionists are concerned, is double the problem - as they will now insist that we find a fossil between A and B, and another between B and C. Fossils are only one thread in the vast tapestry of evidence in support of evolution: comparative anatomy, comparative genetics, geographical distribution, and evolutionary "events in action" (like bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics) are also all compelling evidence for evolution.

if you were really a skeptic of religion, you'd not ask this question. clearly evolution is a proven science. only those that are emotionally dependent on religion doubt it. there have been many steps between modern homo sapiens and early primates, some of which we've found, and some of which we've not found. for some steps, there may well be no preserved fossils, in which case it will not be possible to find then. that does not in any way indicate there's a problem with the evolutionary tree. if you cared, you could note that when evolution was proposed, no-one had ever heard of DNA, much less knew what it was. however, now that we understand it, it exactly matches what we would expect to find. that's what theories do -- predict things before they are found. and when they are found, they lend credence to the theory being correct. if you really don't like it, you might wander back to the R&S section, where you'll get a warmer welcome.

Evolution is a scientific attempt to explain how "God" manifests life forms. It is not anti-religious, for any religion, and it was developed by a Christian. It does not need a "missing link." It, like the rest of science, is an attempt to understand how God manifests It's Will in the physical universe. Personally, I think it's a good idea to stay away from those bacteria that now resist antibiotics. They seem to have evolved very quickly (as expected), and can be very nasty. Dog lovers and rosarians have no problem with natural or artificial selection --- it works for them every time....

Exactly, what is the "missing link" supposed to be. The problem is, every time a missing link is found which fits between two other fossil species, it leaves twice as many gaps (one on each side) for denialists to crow about missing links! But to someone with an objective mind, the pattern is very clear, going back to primate ancestors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_human_evolution_fossils http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_evolution Besides which, fossils are only part of the evidence for human evolution. There is very conclusive molecular evidence etc. eg: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/section4.html#retroviruses

No missing link, (that's why no one has found one yet) If we EVOLVED from primates why then is there STILL primates here??????
Meli
we havent found the missing link yet, but im pretty sure we evolved from primates.
