What is the process of digestion in man?

Describe the role of each organ/part in the process of digestion?

  • here is what I got so far I just need some added information that I might be missing. I need like 50 more words for my assignment. The first digestive phase starts at the mouth and throat. The salivary glands start the process just in the sight and smell of food. The food enters through the mouth and is broken down by teeth and saliva forming into bolus. Then from there it goes through the pharynx into the esophagus. Then in about two to six hours the bolus then goes into the stomach when it is mixed with a semi- liquid mass called chyme. The chyme is then emptied into the small intestine. The secretions from the liver, gallbladder, and the pancreas aid in the digestion process. The rest of the chyme that is not digested from the small intestine is then thrown into the large intestine. It then goes into the colon. As leaving the colon it leaves the body through the anus that is in a form called feces.

  • Answer:

First off, it doesn't take six hours from the time you swallow it to land the stomach. It's a matter of seconds. Here's some tidbits: 1. Saliva actually breaks down some long chain sugars ( starches ) into simple sugars. 2. The stomach is very acidic and degrades much of the connective structure of food. 3. Most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. 4. Some water is reclaimed in the large intestine 5. Large intestine and colon are synonymous. 6. The large intestine (or colon) has the ascending colon the appendix hangs off of this), the transverse colon and the descending colon. 7. There are millions of bacteria, including E. coli, living in the intestinal tract that are essential for our digestion and extraction of nutrients.
