What is a Plant Diversity?

More Plant diversity at the foot of a hill? why? ?

  • why and what are some factors that cause more plant diversity at the foot of a hill than the top of the hill? i notice that at the top there are lots of conifers (same species) but at the bottom theres bits of everything. why is that?

    These are some guesses off the top of my head. 1) there are more resources, nutrients, water at the bottom than at the top, because of runoff. The ones at the bottom are younger and competing for rich resources with none dominating; the conifers up top are older and have eventually dominated their scarce resources over a long period of time 2) Depending on how the plants spread seeds or spores, it is likely easier for those to spread sideways, or downhill, but not uphill. So once the conifers won control of the hilltop, it's nearly impossible for any other species to make inroads. Which wouldn't happen at the foot of the hill, or on a plain. 3) maybe the conifers like it there, and the other plants don't. There usually aren't all that many plants at all on top of a hill, compared to elsewhere. It's not a great place for a plant to be. Maybe conifers are an exception.

I don't know much about that but.... If you want to put something at the peak of the hill, it will have a hard time staying there. There will be more wind and stuff. If seeds somehow go on top, they will roll down in mudslides, and maybe conifers can endure staying on top. its harder to go up a hill than it is to go on the bottom. If the wind blows a seed towards a hill, it will hit the side of the hill and fall. Something like that. Thats what i think, but i barely know anything about that.
