How to make agar agar?

How could I make an agar cell with the biggest mass but the fastest or best diffusion rate?

  • I'll be given agar the size of an icecube. My project or experiment is to make an agar cell with a big mass but it has to have a fast diffusion rate when put into vinegar. We are not allowed to shake, poke, or cut a hole through the agar when in the vinegar...what should my group and I do?

  • Answer:

Diffusion rates are temperature dependent, increasing as the system becomes warmer. The agar matrix will also become more permeable. Warming the apparatus with your hands could be enough to make a difference If the volume of vinegar can be controlled, use the most possible. It will keep the concentration the longest. Stirring the vinegar will reduce gradients just above the surface of the agar, increasing the diffusion rate. If you were casting the cube, I would have suggested using the lowest concentration of agar possible.
