Does anybody accually know what the purpose of having an appendix is?
-
not in a book, in the body.

Answer:
It has no purpose in our bodies. Pandas have appendices and they are used for digesting eucalyptus leaves, so it's believed that at one point in time that the appendix in humans was functioning for similar reasons. As you know, it doesn't hurt us (unless it bursts) which means there is not a strong selection pressure against it which is why it is still in our bodies after so many generations of evolution. Even though it is commonly observed to have no function, in actuality it may serve a function not yet discovered. Most people believe that through evolution, the appendix used to have a purpose but is now unpurposeful, but because Macro-Evolution is too broad, and that would be just the easy answer out, It probably has some function we don't know of.

Nothing. It's called a vestigial organ. Just extra stuff. LIke your tailbone.

It is considered a vestigial organ, something we no longer have a use for. So it does not really need to be there, has no use, and you can spare it if it gets inflamed and needs to be removed. No purpose.

Medical literature shows that the appendix is not generally credited with significant function. There have been cases of people who have been found, usually on laparoscopy or laparotomy, to have a congenital absence of their appendix. There have been no reports of impaired immune or gastrointestinal function in these people. The most common explanation is that the appendix is a vestigial structure with no current purpose.

It helps in food digestion by adding enzymes bacteria to your stool.

It doesnt do anything important really. Its just there for nothing. With evolutioin this might be removed just like the tail. It didnt have any important function and by evolution humans dont have it anymore. We'll talk in a 1000 years time. ( In purgotry or heaven that will be !!!!)
