Why do our eyes tear when we're upset?

Why do our eyes tear up when we're upset? And why do our noses run? I was thinking about it, and wondered if there was a specific reason.

Answer:
Probably a form of non verbal communication. Since we evolved as a social species, the cohesion of the group was paramount. Crying allows people to easily identify when a person is upset, can trigger sympathy and enable behaviours to be modified to allow the group to remain cohesive.
