Gene mapping question.

Gene Mapping - what is it good for?

  • I've been reading in the news about how scientists have de-coded the fruit fly's genome... or as in today's news, they've gene mapped the fungus that causes dandruff. I don't see the impact these discoveries have. What IS gene mapping good for? Thanks for your input!

  • Answer:

I am not sure if it was the fruit flies or what flies, but they were at one time doing something with flies to get them to mate with Blow Flies and then the offspring would not be fertile. In the South and the heat....those flies caused lots of worms in the cattle and there was a need to try and squelch the problem. It might have begun as a Texas Aggie thing. As for the dandruff deal no idea whatsoever, but you know they are mapping genes to see who will be prone to get certain diseases that run in families...so maybe it is a stepping stone to advanced technology??

Gene mapping smaller, simpler animals is easier than mapping more complex animals. We often share the same or similar type of genes. Finding the gene for eye color is easier on teeny sequences than our over 100,000,000 sequences on our genome. The fruit fly genome was mapped a fairly long time ago, when it was it partly was because they just wanted to prove it could be done.

Gene Mapping is an on going investigation and understanding of the Life Functions in various areas .It goes way beyond mapping fungus that causes dandruff. Gene Mapping studies major bacteria organisms that produce deadly diseases that attack plants, animals and humans alike. They are also Gene Mapping DNA studies. In Closing, I believe Scientifically that Gene Mapping is good for medical discoveries and forensic criminal law and So much more in future studies. Sorry if you disagree with the answer given. It's only ones opinion!

Well for starters you'd be surprised how much a human and a fruit fly have in common genetically. Understanding how genes and proteins work in flies can tell us all kinds of things about how they work in humans (since we can't exactly cut humans open to learn about how they work). Mapping the genes in the dandruff fungus is also very important. Understanding the genetics will make it easier to make drugs that can kill those and probably other fungus and maybe even other species. Adding to general biological knowledge is always good. Many times we find out all sorts of interesting and relevant things we weren't even looking for. There would be no erectile dysfunction drugs for instance if we had not been studying heart disease (the original disease Viagra was intended to combat).
