Is Heterochromia usually genetic?

What color eyes will our children have? Heterochromia parents?

  • Hello I'm curious on what the likely-hood (percentage wise would be nice) is of my husband and I having a blue eyed child, a brown eyed child, a green eyed child, and a child with heterochromia. My husband has complete heterochromia (left eye is green right eye is brown) I have sectoral heterochromia (right eye blue left eye split down the middle blue on one side green on the other)

  • Answer:

eye color is controlled by more than one gene, so unfortunately there is not a straight-forward model to predict these ratios! It also depends on the cause of the heterochromia (there are conditions with heterochromia that DO have predictable inheritance patterns, but there are usually other associated findings). Sorry, we're just not advanced enough in the world of genetics to be precise polygenic traits! ;)
