Where on the leaf is the stomata and what is it's function?

What is the relaTIONSHIP between stomata and the function of the leaf?

  • lower epidermis

  • Answer:

stomata help in transpiration.. that is it helps plants to free excess of water. It is a natural evil as a lot of water is lost in this proceess by plants but its necessary as it makes excess of water removed as well as make leaves free from heat so that they did not get dead..

Stomata let air in to the leaf (which the leaf uses for respiration and photosyntesis) and it let the air back out. *sorry that's all i can remember*

Why am I even doing this? O yeah coz ull select mine sas the best answer.. Stomata are pores opened and closed by varying water potentials/malate ion concentrations/ proton pump working/ solute potentials in the guard cells that surround the stoma. These are only mere hypotheses specualted by biologists..nothing's 4 sure. Guard cells either become turgid or flaccid and push or pull the less elastic inner wall (dorsal/ventral?)to close/open stomata in dark/sunlight respectively. They are the only epidermal cells with choloroplasts and are bean seed/kidney-shaped. When open, stoma allow CO2 in for photosynthesis and O2 out if rate of photosynthesis>respiration and vice versa. At the compensation point when both rates are equal(mid-day) no gas exchange occurs. They also allow diffusion of water vapour from sub-stomatal air spaces in spongy mesophyll layer into diffusion shell(layer of air surrounding leaf saturated with water vapour) Thus 'the necessary evil of transpiration' referred to by the 2nd answer coz the plant cools down when water evporates using latent heat and it gives a suction pull for mineral transport. Also it keeps a continuous stream of water into and out of plant. Happy Homeworking!

The leaf is the organ in which photosynthesis occurs. It is also the organ where other food substances such as fats and proteins are formed. Stoma (singular) is a structure, found in the lower epidermis of a leaf. It consists of a pore enclosed by two guard cells. It permits gaseous exchange with the atmosphere. Changes in turgor and shape of the guard cells can open or close the stomatal pore. Stomata are open during the hours of daylight but closed during the evening and most of the night. This pattern, however, varies greatly with the plant species. When the stomata are open, they allow carbon dioxide to diffuse into the leaf where it is used for photosynthesis. If the stomata are closed, the carbon dioxide supply to the leaf is virtually cut off and thus, photosynthesis stops. The stomata allow carbon dioxide into the leaf when photosynthesis is taking place and prevent excessive loss of water vapour (transpiration) when photosynthesis stops. hope this helps ya!! =)
