WHY do some people think that the SPERM is the seed and the EGG CELL isn't!?

why do some people think that the sperm is the seed and the egg isn't? is it just a use of volcabulary? because i refuse to think so..? there has been no proof, if sperm was the seed then how comes i watched this documentary about an egg cell being fertilized WITHOUT sperm? what was the baby made without a seed!? the sperm or egg isn't the seed.. its kind of annoying when people say that the sperm is the seed! trust me if it was then we would have our dads mtDNA.. but yeah why do people think it is? please explain? i watched a show called 'death of the father' and it was a scientist saying how one day they would find out how to fertilize egg cells without sperm, research ;eggs fertilized without sperm' on google! so more likely the egg is the seed if anything.. research on google ' death of the father ' ' making sperm ' and ' egg cells fertilized without sperm ' and in some they fertilized eggs with bone marrowss! i also believe that the egg cell is the seed because of parthenogenesis (research it) its amazing how mammals cells can be fertilized without males, but sperm can never and never will be able to be fertilized without egg cells trust me...... men just want to take phaise for everything, well if it wasn't for women there would be no more babies, the sperm is just the activator in my opinion, SO yeah why the hell do people say that the sperm is the seed, is it because seed means sperm in greek??? i mean when men masturbate/cu*m there cu*m is sperm.. where as womens isn't, it makes me feel like sperm is basically nothing but water, i mean no way is cu~m a seed to a baby! this is just the way i think.

Because they are wrong. The term "seed" is just slang for a mans ejaculate.

It never fails to amaze me when people make assumptions about science when they themselves clearly have no understanding of the issues. This is the kind of nonsense that keeps religion alive.

I think sperm is referred to as seed out of tradition. Before humanity got down to the details of procreation with microscopes and microbiology we had only a vague notion of how sex and birth and whatnot were all related. Intercourse was likened to sowing seeds in the earth. A fine metaphor perhaps, but technically wrong.

Becuase they are cool like that

Because its an old-fashioned term. People hundreds and thousands of years ago equated sex to farming, hence the terms "filling her with my seed," "sowing his wild oats" "spilling his seed" and a plethora of other crude sayings. It's even in the Bible that way. So, even though it isn't technically right, we've only known that men's genes choose the sex of baby and that the sperm and the egg work in certain ways in the last century. And phrases like "sowing his wild oats" have been around for nearly a thousand years. So you are going to have some outmoded terminology. It's natural.

ok then, you need BOTH the sperm and the egg to have a child. the sperm determines the sex of the child. it is a 50/50 dna process.
the eyes have it!
wow, this is an odd subject to rant and rave about. BUT fyi, Sperm: A sperm is the male "gamete" or sex cell. It combines with the female "gamete," called an ovum, to form a zygote. The formation process is called "fertilization So, in essence, neither are technically a seed really. They need either or to perform their main function. But, I think the bigger picture is why this annoys you. I think you sound like one of those people who have the need to always be right. You should probably work on that before you work on correcting everyone's vocabulary/grammar.

A human has 46 chromosomes. One set of 26 comes from the mother (the ovum) and one set of 26 comes from the father (the sperm). Without the sperm or the ovum you cannot have a baby. Humans are not asexual they cannot reproduce without both. So the sperm, or seed must be implanted in the female ovum for fertilization to occur. This can happen naturally, through the c*m as you like to call it, or scientifically through in vitro fertilazation. Any rational human being knows this so I'm really not sure where your confusion lies. You need BOTH the egg and the sperm to create a baby.

I think that, due to lack of understanding of the biology involved, it was seen that the sperm cell was the trigger to produce life, so it was called the seed, and the term stuck. But it has been proven that egg cells can be used to produce embryos without sperm cells. So yes, the term is obsolete.
