Why aren't plants like other organisms, with conscious thought?
-
What is different about plants to us, or other animals, what made us and the animals different to plants? Could plants evolve into conscious beings? I know scientists have made discoveries that make it seem as if plants have simple emotions, does this mean plants will soon be classified as animals? Because in essence animals and plants are the same, growing and striving to live (plants - sun, water, reproduction etc, animals - water, food, reproduction etc). Is it possible that animals and plants evolved from the same thing and the plants are just a primitive less evolved form. I ask because I am making a short film about killer plants, and this one plant in the film has consciousness, and emotions, and while writing the whole thing up this question came to me, why are plants different to animals, animals have bones, plants have ...? animals have blood, plants have ...? etc. Because all animals seem to have similar systems whereas plants do not, plants are completely different, why?

Answer:
Your question highlights "concious thought". There is no "objective" way to measure concious thought. We measure other's conciousness through observation. But the true way to infer conciousness is through ones own feelings. I konw I am concious because 'I am aware', 'I feel'. You think I am concisous because 'you observe certain actions of mine'. As far as observation is concerned, plants do show symptoms of conciousness -> they grow, they survive, but perhaps the most important distinguishing factor is that the 5 primary senses 'sight, touch, smell, taste, hearing' are non-observable to the human eye in most plants. But just because their motions/actions are more limited than ours, one should not think they are not concious. Its like this-> a calculator can do much less than a computer. But fundamentally, they are same -> both are electronic machines, physically based on semiconductors (like plant/animals body made of matter), and subtely/behind the scene running on 'electric current' (as Indian philosophy/Vedanta says -> all living organizms are basically the soul and not the gross body).

It is not true that animals all have similar systems. There are animals such as sponges that do not have a nervous system, just like plants. However, plants do have plasmodesmata that have some similarities to nervous system synapses in animals. And yes, plants and animals do share a very distant relative (single celled eukaryote). However, plants are just as evolved as animals. A bacterium is just as evolved as you or I. It is not as smart obviously, but it comes from as long a line of ancestry as you or I. You ask many good questions, read some biology and discover the wonders of this beautiful science.
