Is it possible to sleep with your eyes open?

How come you can die with your eyes open but you can't sleep with them open?

  • I had to watch my cat being put to sleep recently, and her eyes were still wide open when the vet confirmed that her heart had stopped and she was gone. When we're asleep, our muscles relax and our eyes close. How come my cat's eyes didn't close automatically after she'd died? I don't understand.

    When you sleep, your eyes are closed so they don't dry out. When you die, your brain doesn't function, so it doesn't try to protect the eyes. Also, when you die the majority of your muscles stay in the same state unless they had energy pent up in them. That is why people sometimes have tight fists when they die and sometimes have open hands. As long as there is no tension on the muscles, they remain as they were when the brain stopped trying to communicate with them. Hope that helped.

Some people can sleep with their eyes open. It's scary. The closing of the eyes is a reflex. When we die there is no reflex the close them sometimes.

I don't know what it is, but I'm sorry about your cat. That's never fun. Buildypuss - you're budgy was actually probably pretty lucky, because it sounds like it actually died in its sleep. Birds' feet are relaxed when they are closed, and they have a mechanism to lock them closed while they're asleep so they don't fall off the perch.

when you're asleep, your muscles relax, but they still respond, so your eyes close. when you're dead, however you are, you stay unless someone moves you. you could die with your eyes open, and they stay open because your muscles dont respond anymore, they stay still. hope this helps!!

When you die, muscles aren't relaxed, many a time, you die with your muscles as tense as you were when your alive...being dead isn't like falling asleep, you still have some level of consciousness and control over you senses, when your dead you don't... Leelah

im not really sure but i think because you can die with out knowing really fast (heart attack) and i think thats y ur body dosent have time to react
