Can you recycle old x-rays?

Have these Xrays destroyed my ovaries?

  • I'm a 20 year old female and have had about 50 xrays in the last 3 years. The reason behind all the xrays is due to swallowing foreign objects as I was severely depressed. I have now overcome my depression and am back to my normal self. I am very worried though that these xrays have destroyed my ovaries/eggs and have left me to be infertile? Can that many xrays cause infertility or would my ovaries be okay because I'm so young? Is there any way I can find out? It's playing on my mind as I want children in the future with my partner.

I don't think it's likely to have damaged your fertility much. I just read a neat article on this topic by Stroud et. al in "Fertility and Sterility" v.92 p. 417. They claimed that a woman age 20 who received 3 Gy (the Gy measures radiation dosage) would on average go through ovarian failure at age 39, about 5-10 years earlier than normal. But in your case, an average abdominal x-ray gives you a dose of 0.0014 Gy, meaning your total dose has been around 0.07... much lower than the amount believed to increase your risk. Short answer, I think when you are ready to be a mom you shouldn't have much trouble, at least based on your x-rays. Obviously nothing is guaranteed and a lot of people do have infertility even without any prior risk factors. Heck, you might fall in love with a sterile man:) Before you are ready to TTC, you can ask for a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) test at your doctor to get an idea of how well your ovaries are doing. This is a simple blood test.

there,s not much energy in a modern x ray. you get more exposure by flying a lot at high altitudes. i was exposed to buster brown foot x ray machines a s a kid in the 50,s. buster brown shoe stores had thousands of them. i got more exposure with one x ray than you,ll ever get in a lifetime. you can ask a doctor. they have to know.

no, modern x-rays are very low dose and you'll be fine. The risk, if any, would be genetic damage to the eggs, scans of the foetus will pick up most abnormalities and really abnormal eggs will either not fertilise or miscarry early. you have your entire lifetime supply of eggs at birth, what's done is done.

You may be having periods and ovulating but that does not mean those eggs are fertile.I would hope that the xrays you had were in the area of your abdomine and if there were a chance of causing infertility your doctor should have told you.
