How can I start an anime club?

Why do people hate English dubs of anime so much?

  • Now I know I'll probably generate a lot of hate from this, but everyone I hear who voices their opinions about hating English dubs have all sounded like whiny weeaboo's with the complex that Japan is a perfect country. I do love Japan and it's culture, but I don't use anime as the key part of that. I'll search up this question and all of their points are: -English dubs have a small cast of voice actors -English ruins the "feel" of the show -"English is a horribly ugly language compared to Japanese" -English dubs censor and butcher jokes from the Japanese versions -"English dubs are for weeaboo's who know nothing about anime and Japan" -Characters have no emotions when they talk -ALL English dubs "just suck" To me, none of these reasons are valid. You cannot judge something so large so harshly without give both sides and equal chance in a clean mindset, which they have not. They have the mindset that dubs are bad before they start watching, so it does to them. These people are generally the ones who know next to nothing about Japan, yet they treat it as their "promise land". They have no real reasons for hating dubs. I will admit it though, I was an equal amount of dubs and subs; but I believe it's only fitting to the case. To address their reasons though. Yes, the dubbing industry of anime is usually stuck close between a group of the "stars", but when I hear them in their respective shows they do a great job and while I may recognize them from their other shows, I don't let any of that get in the way because they're doing a good, fitting job. In some cases, yes, an English dub feels awkward and out of place for some shows; mainly the ones that use a lot of Japanese terminology, or when they use an actor with an accent for a character where it's not necessary. I honestly have not seen too many examples of this though. Being an good English speaker natively I can appreciate our own language and see the beauty where it is inserted, but personally I cannot deny how much I love the Japanese language though I don't speak it. I listen to tons of Japanese music and I think it's a beautiful and cool sounding language. However this does not make me bias one or the other. To address the next point, the last time I've seen an English dub completely butcher a show were for series like Card Captors, Pokemon, etc. (however I do prefer Digimon and Pokemon in English no matter how butchered they are). From what I have seen though, this is not true at all for a lot of anime past that time. For all the shows I watch, I watch both the English and Japanese dub. And for a lot of shows, yes, I do prefer the dub over the sub. There are times where I will hate the Japanese dub, but that's only been for one show or so. Some main anime famorites I prefer in English are: Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club, Boys Over Flowers, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Inuyasha, Eureka Seven, and many more than this. Don't judge the titles I listed as "weeaboo anime" just because shows like Bleach and Inuyasha have an annoying fanbase. They're not as bad as we may think sometimes. And some of my biggest peeves are when people say dubs are people who know nothing about anime or Japan. I know quite a bit about both, but I won't bash a dub unless it deserves it. Sometimes it doesn't matter to me which I watch, but then there are times when I feel that English doesn't fit the show or it's characters. For example, the English dub for Eden of the East was well received, but in comparison to the Japanese version I didn't find I got the same feel from the characters. This can of course go both ways depending on the show, however. And one argument they like to use is that English voice actors give no emotions in their performances. Sometimes it's true, sometimes not. But I have not seen a dub I enjoyed where the voice acting fell flat. In fact, they were very rich. And last of all the argument that "English dubs just suck". It's the worst one of all since it has nothing backing it up, but it's used most frequently. These people will bash a dub without so much as hearing them. Some more things that p*ss me off are when they think that they are Japanese and fully understand the humour, but when they laugh at a Japanese joke they don't understand it at all because it's not relevant to their own culture. The only reason they laugh is because they think anything Japanese is automatically better. For one example, Cromartie High School is hands down better and funnier to an English speaker because of how excellently they made it fit with the show. To those who hate English dubs, go try it out. But this is just my take on it, and I fail to understand how they can have such unfair and bias views. In your opinion, why do so many pe

  • Answer:

Compared to what everyone thinks, not all dubs are bad. There are alot out there that did a great job and had great voice actors. They probably put them down because they have that "if it isn't as close to the original, then its an abomination". I like both, I even have a great appreciation for dubs because watch a couple of interviews with the English voice actors, they look like they really enjoy their job. SO IF ALL YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE SAYING DUBS SUCK, I DON'T SEE YOU HAVING A VOICE ACTING CAREER. HELL, I BET MOST OF YOU COULDN'T DO ANY BETTER.

I usually think the Japanese dubs are better. They just feel more right. Of course there are some English dubs that are superior in English than it is in Japanese, like Spice and Wolf and Cowboy Bebop

some animes are just beter when they are in japanese version but i don't hate all the english dub

Often it's just so horribly translated. I always watched dubs to begin with, but after I started watching the original ones I noticed how different it was. It sometimes becomes a whole other story. In the dubbed ones they also censor a lot and it can be a bit annoying :)

It's usually because the original version illustrates the intended tone of voice the best. For example, we know that The Simpsons has an amazing English version (being produced in the USA), but in Japan, it sounds horrendous. Personally, I like most English dubs.

Those reasons aren't valid? People don't have to have valid reasons to like or dislike certain things. It just hits their ear wrong, I suppose. There are good dubs out there. There's Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, FMA Brotherhood, Texhnolyze, Mushi-shi, and a small handfull of others. However, I think most dubs suck. Why? A: Because it's just my opinion, and I shouldn't need any other reason than that. B: A lot of the time I don't feel the VA chosen suit the character at all. C: They pronounce things wrong. Ever watched the Naruto, InuYasha, or Bleach dubs? They're terrible, that's why so many people butcher the correct ways to pronounce names and techniques. I personally don't care how people say it-- but *I* want to know how to say things the right way. D: You can learn a little bit of Japanese through subs. E: Dubs are chopped up and censored a lot of the time. They don't just censor the language, but certain dubs have entire scenes edited out so they can air on children's networks. F: It ruins the serious tone of the anime. Haven't you ever watch an anime that was serious, but was dubbed over with really cartoonish voices? It's annoying. G: Even anime like Mushi-shi that have fantastic dubs (Travis Willingham is my favorite voice actor of all time, he's also Roy Mustang in the FMA dub, and Jonny in the videogame Catherine) have such a heavy Japanese feel to them, that a lot of people just think the Japanese voice actors suit it better. Just like a lot of people like Cowboy Bebop better in English because it is so western.

Personally, I prefer the subbed versions more. I do agree with you that most of the points you listed above are ridiculous reasons for not watching dub. I do watch dubs sometimes, however, as I said, I prefer subs. One reason is because a lot of the dubbed voices are sometimes HORRIBLE. They just don't fit the characters (like Naruto Uzumakis dub). I'm not saying it's bad...it's just not good. Also there tends to be more in the subs. When America dubs videos, a lot of the time they will take out a lot of the gore/cussing because (apparently) it's some "big deal" if a teenager sees blood/hears cussing. Take DBZ (Dragon Ball Z) as an example. They changed it to DBZ: Kai and it lost SO much in the editing. Finally, I prefer subs because it helps me with my Japanese. I am beginning to get to where I can just listen to some of the show and know what they're saying without reading the subtitles. Also, subs come out sooner. Take Naruto as another example. The dubs are on episode 127 and the subs are on episode 253. EDIT: First, yes 4kids takes a lot out of shows. They tend to ruin the anime shows they get a hold of. Second, I do try to watch dubs in a lot of the anime I watch, however, I can’t seem to get into the story as well and switch to subs. Here is a list of newer anime that I feel are much better subbed than dubbed: Kuroshitsuji (A.K.A Black Butler) Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist) Durarara!!! Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Strait Jacket (this is a movie, and yes they kept the gore in it, however, the subbed version is better.)

It's just an online cult that bonds with each other over a common "enemy." And if they need to make up reasons to justify it, any claptrap will do. It gives them a sense of belonging to a large group. The need to herd together and moo in the same direction (coupled with the fear of being unaccepted if you moo in a different direction).
