I don't hate Anime. I hate its influence on people. What do you think?
-
Now I'm probably a hypocrite for saying this but : I hate anime nerds. I really do. But I'm not some person who has viewed them from the outside. No, I've been there at a time in my life. Let me take you back 7 years to my middle school days. I discovered anime on Toonami and while I didn't obsess over it at first, I did quite enjoy the show and didn't miss an episode when it aired. But when I discovered that anime was vastly larger than just the television, it was hook, line and sinker. I was caught and dragged down into the pit. I collected tons of manga, learned I was decent at drawing because of manga (I'd always had an affinity towards art but this gave me a reason to draw), watched anime alot and got into games. I had yet to dress up at a convention yet and I had seriously been thinking about it. Until my freshman year of highschool. I'd heard the highschool had an anime club and I was interested. I mean, a group of like minded people who shared similar interests was a great way to start out my highschool career! I attended one meeting. And that was it for me. They wore their costumes to school. No, not lolita outfits. Like full out Squall Leonhart and Naruto costumes. To class. And they were so....so bad. And the way they talked and how stunted they were shocked me too. I was 14 and I had just started discovering my sexual side. While I wasn't going out of my way to bang guys, I did embrace sexuality and sexual ways. But the anime people in this group talked about how sex was gross and how they didn't understand how people enjoyed it because 'it was nasty'. Yet here they were talking about their favorite 'sexy' character and reading manga with boudatious beauties doting the covers. I think it was how these people completely let go of reality and delved into their fantasies that freaked me out. In my opinion, one has two feet and it is healthy to have one planted in both reality and fantasy. I mean, if both were in reality, then we would have no dreams or inventive ideas. No art, no imagination. But on the other side, with no feet in reality, you have no idea about human nature or the social norm. Despite our urges to stay children forever, growing up is a necessity to life. Grown ups can enjoy anime and other fantastical things, but they also must realize that there is so much more in the world that is just as fantastic and wonderful (or even more) than in anime. I must sound very bitter and I'm truly sorry for such a long post, but this how I feel and I want to know if I have a right to hate this or if I'm a hypocrite. (Ex. I hate Twilight because of the fans.)

Is this a real question or a rant? Sounds like a rant to me. If you don't like us anime fans, then fine. You don't have to let us know, nor do you need us to tell you that you are a hypocrite. Because, as you said, people need to grow up. And part of being a grown up is knowing things like this. And you know, kids are just naturally immature. Of course they will think sex is gross, though, that's not how it is today. Since these days all kids are into is sex and boyfriends/girlfriends. I know this because if I recall correctly, along with a bunch of other evidence, I overheard a 15 year old in my school saying "oh, i only gave him a ******* behind the shed, that's all". ^^ I could go on and on about that but that's not the point, is it? What did you expect when you joined an anime club? I would expect nothing less than people in cosplay. And note that you said you were 14. Were the other kids in this group the same age as you? You're mentioning grownups in your last paragraphs, but those people in that club were not adults, they were kids....why do they need to grow up so early? And lastly, anime is the LAST thing that has a bad influence on people. Look at the media. Look at Miley Cyrus, who dates adults, gives lapdances to adults, kisses adults, and grows up to fast. Look at Lady GaGa, with her popular songs that all deal with sex. Look at Rihanna with her raunchy clothing. Tell me that the influence these people have on teens is not as bad as anime does on kids? Even when anime is NOT the most popular thing in America? BTW, I hate twilight not only because of the fans but because of how dumb Bella is. The only thing I hate about my fellow anime fans is that most of the females somehow "fall in love" with a freaking drawing. Seriously? "Oh Sasuke!"

Well I'm a HUGE anime fan, but that doesn't interfere with my school life or friends. I have friends based on how we get along with each other not what anime shows they watched. Plus some of my friends like anime but there not obsessed with it. I remember in like 7 or 8th grade this girl came to school wearing Naruto stuff from head to toe, at that time I liked anime but had only watched a few, and believe me I though that girl was way over in fantasy land. One thing I hate is when people fantasize over characters, they're not real get over it. I may think some guys are cute and stuff like that but seriously I wouldn't ever pick an anime guy over a real guy, helloo paranoid much? Those people need to learn anime is not a priority it's a leisure activity to do in you free time. I guess that's the problem though, too much free time, well that just means they need to get their but into the real world and enjoy what's really here not sit on a pc all day watching fantasies. Oh and about Twilight I was so in love with twilight (not obsessed but it was one of my favorite books) but now all you see is I love edward, oh Jacob is so hot, vampires are sooo cool now. Crap like that and it annoys me, books and movies are there to entertain, they are not a substitute for real life. Do you know how many girls have told me they will either marry Edward or Jacob, many..... I am an anime watcher and proud of it but I'm also well aware anime is NOT my life and will never be..

If it wasn't anime, then it would be something else. (Star Wars, Star Trek, Magic The Gathering, D&D, comic books or anything else that tends to attract these people and isn't necessarily popular) You can't blame anime for this. When we are teens, we all mature at different rates. As people get older some of them grow out of that phase, but some of them don't. Those people have issues. It could be a mental condition or they have simply lost touch with reality. Don't forget that men mature slower than women. I've met a few guys around 19-21 that still have that silly mentality. They might be interested in women, but as long as they continue to act the way they do, it won't get them anywhere. As for your experiences in HS...I'm surprised that no one was interested in sex. My anime friends were interested in it, but obviously were too nerdy to actually get that far with a girl. A lot of them tried to date and get involved with the opposite sex. (Although I do know a few girls that didn't seem that interested in dating or sex at that time. However in enough time that changed.) You absolutely have the right to feel the way you do. I feel very similarly. I would love to tell people that I like anime, but I don't because I'm compared to those people. When you're younger it might not be as big of a deal what people think, but as you get older it does matter. If people thought I acted like any of my fellow fans, then I might not have the job I have or have done some of the things I have done.

Yeah some people are too obsessed with anime. I say just ignore them.

They were kids. What did you expect? :/ Every teenager does and says stupid things. When they grow older, they calm down and become more mature and grounded.
Oh God. Dont hate the anime fans just because of the people at your school. I absolutely LOVE anime. More than you can think. But these people cant obtain themselves. They arent for you. I love anime, i could start a topic about it and talk non-stop. But i know when to stop or not talk about around the appropiate people. I am a funny person, who laughs at perverted jokes and im comfertable enough to talk about it. its fine, dont hate us just for this though. I think going to class in full cosplay and calling it "different" in their own 'ways' is a bit too stupid. They need to get back into reality. I mean, its fine fantasizing [I do; wondering what kingdom hearts would look like if they were real,] but just trying to live in it is...no offense but stupid and annoying. I know a girl who pretends that shes Rukia from bleach. Never watched it because i never understood it, but she wears alot of black and white dresses and from what ive heard from her friends is that shes trying to act like her :/ But let them do their own thing. If you dont like them then just go away from them.
To me it just sounds like you got caught up in a weird anime club. I'm in the anime club at my uni. I mean, we watch anime, we've cosplayed at uni (for Halloween and then we had a Geek Week earlier this year), but we also just sit around and talk. And sometimes go out together in our breaks. But we're not going to turn up to class all dressed up, unless it was like one of those things I mentioned before. So yeah - no offence taken - just don't get the wrong idea. I think the people you met were probably what most anime fans would call "otakus", or at least pretty close to us. From my opinion, those guys give the rest of us fans a bad name. Because most of us a relatively normal. As for whether you have a right to hate it - it's up to you. I think you have the right to feel how you want about the situation. People can say you're right or you're wrong or you're partly right and partly wrong, but we can't tell you how to feel about it.

I'm a huge anime fan, but I don't go around cos playing and talking about it like I'm obsessed. Yeah, I used to love twilight a long time ago, but now reading it over again I realize it's horrible, and things are so cheesy. I don't know, maybe that's just me. Oh and all the fangirls obessing over Twilight doesn't help either, like geez it's so annoying, like my cousin every time she'd come over she'd see something about Edward or whatever and she'd be like, "**** you, Edward. Jacob is hot."

yeah i agree with u, i watch anime as a form of relaxation after a hard day at college, but i know it has mostly nothing to do with reality so i dont let it influence my everyday life, best thing to do is ignore people who take it very seriously
