Which advisor is better? (FINANCIAL ADVISORS?

Grammar Q: Mr. Smith & Co. Legal Advisor, or, Mr. Smith & Co. Legal Advisors?

  • Hi I have a grammatical question, is it correct to say "Mr.Smith & Co. Legal Advisor", thus indicating they are not partners or does the "& Co." bit force a plural: "Legal Advisors"? Answers from ELT and law specialists welcome!

  • Answer:

I would say 'Legal Advisors' or, if I didn't want to use a plural, I'd avoid it by saying 'Legal Advice'- thus specifying the service offered, rather than the role of everyone in the company.

Other answers

It would seem like a company cannot be an advisor; the people (plural) who work there are. So with no additional words between Co. and Legal, use plural. But you would say Mr. Smith and Co. does our legal advising.
