What does internal/external mean?

What does "mean what we take them to mean" mean?

  • This is the whole line; "moral judgements must mean what we take them to mean; and what we take them to mean, is such that they do not mereley make autobiographical claims but a sort of claim which is being rejected by someone who utters a contrary moral judgement. Since my natural language isn't english, i don't really understand what they mean by 'what we take them to mean' means.. to put it very clearly ;)

  • Answer:

The meaning of "...mean what we take them to mean" is actually explained in the quotation you offer. It goes on to say, "...they do not merely make autobiographical claims but a sort of claim which is being rejected by someone who utters a contrary moral judgment". Which is to say that moral judgments must not be made on the basis of something that happened to a specific person but rather should be a claim made by someone who speaks ab opposite moral judgment. That is how I read it.
